The Heart of the Matter Funds CHD Research
More About The Children's Heart Foundation
The Children's Heart Foundation is a 501(c) not-for-profit organization with Chapters in 12 states and several more under development.
The mission of The Children's Heart Foundation is to fund the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects, the worlds #1 birth defect.
The Children's Heart Foundation provides critical funding, oftentimes for the initial stages of new research projects, and serves as a catalyst to many important medical advances. When it was started in 1996, there were no organizations in the US whose sole focus was on congenital heart research. Since that time CHF has also done several supporting projects where there has been a void or lack of educational or awareness materials available to the general public.
The first of those projects was the, "It's My Heart" Book- now the leading layman's guide to congenial heart defects for parents and patients of all ages. The second project was to work with The Adult Congenital Heart Association and Mended Little Hearts on the Congenital Heart Futures Act. The legislation, championed by Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, was passed in 2010. Subsequent funding, made available by Congress in 2012, authorized the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to create the first National Congenital Heart Disease Surveillance System. The Congenital Heart Futures Act also encourages the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to conduct or support more research on CHD diagnosis, treatment, prevention and long-tem outcomes. The Children's Heart Foundation has been a part of the NHLBI's Public Information Organization Network since the program started in 1997.
The Children's Heart Foundation is not affiliated with any one medical institution. Rather its Medical Advisory Board is made up of leading congenital heart specialists throughout the US who annually review grant requests and recommend to the most promising to fund.
With the purchase of The Heart of the Matter DVD, The Children's Heart Foundation can accelerate their funding process in the hopes to one day find the causes and ways to prevent the defects from ever occurring.
